Whimsy & Wonder Casing

by Bonnie Hershfeldt, October 24, 2021

Happy Sunday from NYC!  Last evening of my long weekend trip with my youngest son David.  We started the weekend on Friday by driving up to Sleep Hollow.  We stayed at the Tarrytown House Estates.  We went to a storytelling event of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow at Washington Irving's home along the Hudson River.  And then strolled amongst the pumpkin carvings at the Hudson Valley Blaze event.  The rest of the weekend we spent catching up in the city at his new apartment, eating fabulous meals, seeing a Broadway play - Waitress again but this time with Jennifer Nettles playing Jenna and watching Halloween movies!   I got to visit with his mentor, Preston Conrad and his new Candle and Home Fragrance shop in Hell's Kitchen.  David did a fabulous job of the fall window display!  It was so heartwarming to be with him again!  I can't wait for Christmas when he is home again for the Holidays!  I will look forward to coming back for a visit again soon!

As I have been traveling this week, I prepared two cards before I left home to share with you from the Whimsy & Wonder Suite.  While preparing for my Whimsy & Wonder Card Class, which is next Saturday, 10/30, I was looking at Pinterest for inspiration and I found Tammy Wilson from StampsPapersScissors.  I fell in love with her designs and had to case these two beautiful cards from one of my favorite Stampin' Up! suites from the 2021 July - December Mini Catalog.

The coordinating colors for this lovely suite is truly whimsical and non traditional for Christmas!  My favorite color is pink - so this fun palette of colors calls to my heart:  Blushing Bride, Crumb Cake, Iridescent, Mint Macaron, Misty Moonlight, Mossy Meadow, Polished Pink.

The first of the two cards uses a couple of my most favorite techniques:  using my blending brushings and creating splotches with my Stampin' Blend markers!

Whimsy & Wonder Bundle

How do you make the splotches with your Stampin' Blends markers?  You will be amazed on how easy!  Just take the lid off of the paint brush end of the marker and facing the maker towards the paper, flick the brush end from the inside of the cap edge towards the paper and there you go!  Splotches!

How do you make the tree in three colors?  Do you have Sponge Daubers?  Another easy technique!  Using 3 different sponge daubers - one for each ink color - dab your sponge dauber into the ink and then onto the stamp.  When all 3 colors have been applied, stamp onto your card base!  So Colorful!!!!

I changed my version of Tammy's card just a little bit by using a zig zag of the Polished Pink 3/8" Openweave Ribbon behind the trees.  I used the Brick & Mortar 3D Embossing Folder for the background.

The second card is so sweet - three little watercolor trees.

I'm not a great watercolor artist - lol!  But these little trees were just the right size for me to practice with.  I used Stampin' Up!'s Fluid 100 Watercolor Paper and Stampin' Up!'s Water Painters for watercoloring.  I started by applying a plain water wash on the watercolor paper to make it damp to apply the color - just press the Water Painter to release the water into the brush.  I then pressed the  middle of the stamp case and then opened.  This leaves a bit of ink on the lid.  I then picked up the ink with the Water Painter - don't soak the brush - just damp enough - and applying to the paper.  Continue until you have the level of color that you like - having different shades is the best!  I used Polished Pink, Coastal Cabana and Soft Seafoam Green for my three little trees.  Once the trees were dry, I die cut them with the small "squatty" tree die from the Christmas Trees Dies.

I changed my background a little from Tammy's by using the Wintry 3D Embossing Folder.  The whisper of wind tossing the snowflakes to and fro are just the special touch for a holiday card.

Which technique will you give a try in your next crafting session?
