Springtime Joy and the Scrappy Technique

by Bonnie Hershfeldt, March 08, 2021

Happy Monday!  What a beautiful weekend - and today was 70 here in Denver.  Hang on though - 3 days of snow coming this weekend - Springtime in the Rockies!

Thinking of Spring had me crafting in my craft room this weekend.  I wanted to play with my Springtime Joy Stamp set - I just love the little lamb and bunny.  They are just so sweet.  I also love the soft pastel colors of Spring and pulled out my Subtle's 6" x 6" DSP and tried the Strippy Technique.  I have admired cards made with this technique and it seemed the right time to play with some scraps.  I found a couple of you tube videos hosted by Kylie Bertucci and her husband, Bruno.  Bruno created a card with this technique and it took off!  So a year later, I'm getting around to try it out.

It looks much more complicated than it is!  Basically, I cut strips of paper at angles and then glued to a "foundation".  I used white card stock for my cards, depending on what you are designing around, it could be black, colored or foiled cardstock.  Starting on one end of the foundation, glue the strip down along the short end of the foundation aligning straight edges.  From there lay down the next strips leaving a small space between the previous strip.  I rotated mine every other strip in order to keep the angles a little straighter.  Once all the strips are down on the foundation, trim all four sides to make the background size - I trimmed mine to 3 3/4" x 5".  I then glued the finished piece to a 4" x 5 1/4" white cardstock.  Then mounted to a border of 4 1/8" x 5 3/8" which is mounted onto a  4 1/4" x 5 1/2" card front.

If you want to keep your card simple, a simple label with a sentiment is all you need.

I kept it simple with my little bunny and my little lamb.  I stamped them in Smoky Slate Classic Stampin' Pad and then colored their flower band with Stampin' Blends.  I took a cotton ear swab and dabbed their cheeks with Magenta Madness Classic Stampin' Pad for a little blush.  I fussy cut them and adhered to my card front under a piece of DSP punched from the Rectangle Postage Stamp Punch.  The sentiment was stamped from the same stamp set with Tuxedo Black Memento Ink Pad and then colored the flower with Stampin' Blends.  The little flowers and eggs were die cut from the Wreath Builder Dies and the eggs were stamped from the Arrange a Wreath Stamp set  These can be purchased in a bundle to save 10%.  I finished off the cards by embellishing with Champagne Rhinestone Jewels and a Whisper White Polka Dot Tulle Ribbon bow.

So many other Strippy Technique combinations rolling around in my head as I have a lot of scraps accumulating in my craft room.  This could be a great way to use larger scraps for scrapbook pages too!

I'm thinking another class is in the visionary stage.  I'm getting a little braver the closer I get to the time I can get my vaccination to hold classes at my home again.  In the meantime, start gathering your scraps to give this technique a try!
