Prized Peony

by Bonnie Hershfeldt, July 19, 2020
Happy Birthday to my mother, Alice!  Yesterday was her 85th Birthday - she is such a sweety.  This was another one of those big milestones for her.  Today, we were able to bring her to our home and had a small party with one of her favorites - Pizza!  Not eating out that much these days, it was a huge surprise that many of our favorite pizza parlors are now closed on Sundays.  Thank goodness my son, Sean, who lives near a good pizza parlor in North Denver, they were open and he and the pizza parlor saved the day!  I did her nails, gave her a big blingy ring, a special card, cake and ice cream!  It was a great day!

My mom always had flowers growing in her garden.  Some were already established in the homes that they rented, until she was able plant her own when they were able to buy a home of their own, especially the beautiful Peony bushes.  My mother had two spectacular pretty pastel pink Peony plants that had the big fluffy pink flowers that made their appearance in her garden every June.  When I opened up the new Stampin! Up ® 2020-2021 Annual Catalog and saw the beautiful Peony Garden Suite collection - I added it to my list immediately.  Last night, I brought out my suite and had so much fun making cards including a special one for her birthday!

I found a card made by Emma Goddard, the Coastal Crafter, that drew my attention immediately as it was made with the new Magenta Madness - one of this year's new Stampin! Up ® In Colors.  This is a spectacular hot pink!  I made a few changes with my version of Emma's card.  I added the die cut border from the Prized Peony die set on the bottom of the card front.  I used Silver edged white satin ribbon, added the sentiment and the new Peony Elegant Faceted Gems.  I colored the large peony with the new Magenta Madness Stampin' Blends Combo.  I colored the stems and leaves with the Granny Apple Green Stampin' Blends Combo.  If you haven't tried Stampin' Blends yet, it's a definite must.  These alcohol based markers have a paint brush end and a smaller harder nib end.  They blend together beautifully without streaking.

I love to add a little special surprise on the inside of the card and the envelope.  I stamped the inside  of the card with the large peony from the Prized Peony stamp set and Magenta Madness ink by stamping off once.  This is the perfect effect for a faded embellishment.  I used the medium peony from the stamp set and Magenta Madness ink and stamped the lower front corner of the envelope.

Instructions for making this card:

  • Cut Magenta Madness cardstock at 4 1/4" x 11" for the card base.  Score in half at 5 1/2".  Die cut the scalloped border at the bottom of the card front with the border die from the Prized Peony die set.
  • Cut a 1" x 2 1/2" strip from Magenta Madness cardstock - save for card front sentiment.
  • Cut Whisper White cardstock for card front at 3 3/4" x 4 3/4".
  • Cut Whisper White cardstock for card inside at 4" x 5 1/4".
  • Cut Whisper White cardstock for large peony at 3" x 4".
  • Cut a 3/4" x 2 1/4" strip - save for card front sentiment.
  • Stamp 3 partial variations of the large peony from Prized Peony stamp set with Memento Black on the left side and along the bottom of the 3 3/4" x 4 3/4" Whisper White cardstock.  Clean stamp for next use.
  • Stamp large peony on 4" x 5 1/4" Whisper White cardstock with Magenta Madness.  Stamp off once first before stamping onto the cardstock.  Clean stamp for next use.
  • Stamp "your sweet friendship refreshes the soul" sentiment with Memento Black Ink on top of the large Magenta Madness Peony.
  • Stamp the "love & thanks to a dear friend" sentiment on the 3/4" x 2 1/4" Whisper White strip and adhere to the 1" x 2 1/2" Magenta Madness strip with Stampin! Seal.
  • Stamp medium peony from the Prized Peony stamp set on the lower left hand corner of a White Medium envelope.
  • Stamp large peony on 3" x 4" Whisper White cardstock with Memento Black Ink.  This is very important to use Memento Black Ink as you will be working with the Stampin! Blends which are alcohol based markers.  Memento Black Ink will not bleed when using Alcohol based markers.
  • Color this with Magenta Madness Stampin! Blend Combos for the flower and Granny Apple Green Stampin! Blend Combos for the leaves and stems.  I colored the shaded areas first with the darker Stampin! Blend and then color the entire flower and leaves/stems with the lighter Stampin! Blends.  I did go back using the darker Stampin! Blend to add a little more darker shading here and there.  And then followed up with blending with the ligher Stampin' Blend.
  • Cut the colored large peony using the coordinating die shape from the Prized Peony die set.
  • Cut a 12" piece of the Silver Edged White Ribbon.
  • Place the large colored peony onto the black stamped peony imaged cardstock using Stampin! Dimensionals.  You many want to use some Mini Stampin! Dimensionals for the the thinner parts of the stem/leaves.  Wrap the Silver Edged White Ribbon around this and tie into a knot.  Clip ends at a diagonal.
  • Place the sentiment at the top right corner inset about 1/8" inch.  Adhere with Stampin! Dimensionals
  • Adhere this decorated card front to the front of the card base with Stampin! Seal.
  • Adhere the decorated inside cardstock to the inside of the card with Stampin! Seal.
I made another version with three medium peonies stamped in Memento Black Ink from the Prized Peony stamp/die set.  I colored one with the Petal Pink Stampin! Blends Combo, one with the Blushing Bride Stampin! Blends Combo, and the last with the new Magenta Madness Stampin! Blends Combo.

And the fun didn't stop.  I made two more using the marble like paper from the Peony Garden DSP package from the suite.   The DSP package contains 2 each of 6 double sided sheets. The coordinated colors in this suite are one of my favorite combinations - pinks and gray.

I placed a Square Vellum doily, from the suite, behind the colored peonies.  I stamped each in Memento Black ink and colored one with the Petal Pink Stampin! Blends Combo and the other in the Blushing Bride Stampin! Blens Combo.  I love the Gray Granite 1/4" Shimmer ribbon - it has a stunning sparkle!  I added three of the Petal Pink Elegant Facted Gems to finish the bling!

Lastly, I found a card made by Wendy Lee - Creatively Lee Yours - that was perfect for my mom's birthday card.  It is gorgeous!  My mom really was so amazed at her birthday card - and I was just a little proud that I made it especially just for her.

This suite has so many beautiful products.  The collection contains the Prized Peony bundle (stamp set and die set - 10% savings), Peony Garden Designer Series Paper (DSP), Dainty Diamond 3d embossing folder, Square Vellum doilies, Elegant Faceted Gems, Gray Granite 1/4" Shimmer Ribbon.  During Bonus Days, you will earn two $5 coupons with the addition of an order of Stampin! mini dimensionals.  This wee dimensionals really help to pop up all of the layers in this fabulous die cut Peony.

I would love to do a workshop on this exquisite collection.  I so wish that we could do something at my home.  I've thought about the back porch the view is pretty - but it's been a little warm here - broke 100 degrees two days this week.  I could have 4 people inside my home to maintain social distancing - anyone want to give it a try?  I'm waiting for my new equipment in order to hold an online class - the equipment I wanted is out of stock and they are making more so it may be a few more weeks before I can do a workshop online.

Please leave a comment on which card is your favorite!  I would love to hear which one you like and definitely I would love to hear if you would like to try a face to face workshop showcasing the Peony Garden Suite.

Please submit your information under the Keep Up Today on the right hand side of my blog to automatically receive notification when a new blog is posted.

I hope you find time this week to make something beautiful and stay cool!

Here is a picture of my beautiful, sweet mom on her 85th birthday!
